Salvation Army.

Avoid Christian charities, they always keep some of the donation for themselves, greedy little b*astards.

Find a christian run senior center or retirement home, esp for the poor.

Search for united way, (your city). When you get to the site, there should be a list of all of the agencies that they sponsor/assist with money. You should be able to find an agency that works with the elderly. A lot of people don’t realize UW only funds a portion of those agencies, they depend on outside donations of money, services or time, to be able to provide for their customers.

Otherwise look in the phone book for a nursing home and volunteer your time, etc. there.

There is a D.C. based charity called the Internatinal Justice Mission. This group investigates and legally intervenes on behalf of people all over the world being held in slavery, particularly women and children being sold into sexual slavery. I first heard about this organization, because the president came to speak at my church. There was also an MSNBC special about some of their investigations concerning the child sex trade in southeast Asia. I strongly encourage you to look into this charity. Here in America we live so well it is hard to believe that such atrocities are commonplace in underdeveloped countries. God bless you.

Nursing Home is calling you through your church.

Go and visit your local Senior Citizens Center. This should also be in the yellow pages. Ask questions as to where the money is needed. Perhaps ask when you would be allowed to visit and I encourage this. Some are dumped there and get very little acknowledgment from their families if any.
This is so self rewarding, but look at what you can do for them.

People need to stop viewing the elderly as objects of charity and pity. If you really want to make a difference, find an advocacy organization in your city that focuses on supporting independant living projects for the elderly. They are about the only real alternative to the inhumanity of our system of institutionalizing millions of older Americans to nursing homes instead of providing the support that would enable most of them to continue to live normal, independant lives.

And if you find such an advocy/support organization that is also Christian, fine. But please–focus on finding those who actually do good work, and forget the labels.
