There are risks with every surgery, infection, excess bleeding, and yes death. These are uncommon, but they do happen. One thing I would like for you to consider is if your moms kidneys stopped working because of a disease that may effect your kidneys later in life I would not recommend donating, if you do get a kidney disease you will definitely need both of your own kidneys. Also you should know that the transplant is much worse for the donor than the recipient. not much, but you will probably be on pain meds for a little while and miss a few weeks of school/work. Tests you will have done will be a lot of blood work, the doctors will test your heart, bones, liver, and just about everything else. I want you to also know that this is one of the best things you could ever do for your mother or anyone else, it will change her life so much, I had a kidney transplant in october of last year, Im 21 no kids or wife so at least for now it is the happiest day of my life. If you have more questions you can email me or call your moms doctor or any transplant clinic, im sure they wouldn’t have any problem answering your questions.
